Association of Thai Travel Agents’ members handled 216,257 international travellers at Suvarnabhumi Airport in May representing a remarkable growth of 212.93% from 69,107 visits during the same month last year, according to the association’s latest data.
The improvement was dramatic because during April to May, 2010, the country was hit by political unrest and violent clashes between red shirt protesters and the military in downtown Bangkok.
The crisis ended in a bloody crackdown,19 Ma,y with at least 89 casualties.
The top tourist supplier for Thailand’s inbound tour operators was China providing 50,368 trips. It represented a massive growth of 1,780% over 2,679 trips during the same month last year.
The second top market was India with 29,445 trips, an increase 47.08% from 20,020 trips. Russia was the third top market with 17,771 trips, up 59.95% from 11,110 trips.
Taiwan followed in fourth place with 16,216 trips growing by a massive 2,936.70% compared with 534 trips in 2010.
Korea came in fifth place with 16,161 trips representing a 287.74% increase of 4,168 trips during the same month last year.
The next top five suppliers were: Japan (9,219; +252.81%); Vietnam (8,748; +2,109.09%); Hong Kong (7,465; +22,512.12%); Indonesia (7,384; +709.65%) and Iran (4,519; +18.11%).
